If your wordpress blog has disappeared…

October 12th, 2009 | 10 Comments | Posted in Wordpress

Shocked_KidzIt takes months to make a blog while it takes a second to collapse just because of some stupid theme malfunctioning. In last couple of weeks it happened with me a couple of times. For the first time I was shocked, speechless and unable to think anything. When my senses were back, the first thought was, “Will it come back”. After a long brain storming, loads of experiments and Google search, I got it back. If it has happened to you, Don’t worry you can get your blog back.

Normally it happens while activating some theme or plugin, so the main concept is to delete the theme/plugin folder from you directory,

1. Connect to you site through ftp.

2. Locate the theme folder for the theme changing to which your blog was disappeared. e.g. If it was Inove theme then the location must be public_html/wp-content/themes/inove.

3. Delete the folder.

4. Go to your web browser and put the address for your dashboard page i.e. www.yoursite.com/wp-admin

5. Dashboard page will appear. Click on change theme button.

6. Change theme page will appear with the message, “Your current theme has broken, Default theme activated.”

7. Activate any other theme and your blog is back.

Is it back? Carry on the show…

I deleted the theme folders, but I still can’t get past the “install wordpress” site.
If you have any more suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

    @Esme

After deleting the particular theme folder (not the entire theme folder), put the address of your dashboard in address bar i.e. http://www.yoursite.com/wp-admin.

By this way dashboard should appear

My blog has a static home page. Blog is on a separate page. I set it up through “Reading Settings”. After upgrading some plugins, the Post menu disappeared from admin; blog shows no posts.

I switched to different theme and yes, the posts showed on Home Page, but still no Post menu in admin and Reading Settings show error “Unable to show your latest posts”.

The database is there. I see the posts in the database.

Any suggestions on how to fix the problem?

    Thank you.

Your problem is unique and I have never passed through such problem, so only thing we can do is hit and trial method. Try the following attempts and lets hope for the best. Try the first method first, if it doesn’t work then only jump to next one and so on…

    1. Switch to default kubric theme.
    2. Remove the static page and make your blog your home page.
    3. Remember the theme or plugin switching to which caused the problem and delete that theme or plugin folder through ftp.
    4. If any of the above doesn’t work, then delete all the plugins and themes through ftp. I hope it will fix the problem, Once fixed then restore all your plugins. If this also doesn’t work then you may switch to next step but be extremely careful or you may end up loosing your blog.
    5. Make a backup of your database, Set up a new wordpress blog elsewhere (there are a lot of free hosts which give instant activation) using the database, then delete your current Wordpress. Install a fresh one through import blog option.

I hope you dont have to reach the last step. All the best.
